My Page, My Blog
Well, I’ve done it. I created my own photography web site. This has really been a long time in development and I’ve given this idea a lot of thought.
I have been using Instagram to display my photography but the algorithm is not favorable to photographers who don’t want to make videos for their posts, and it favors portrait orientation rather than landscape orientation photos. Since most of my photos are created and displayed in landscape orientation that has been a big problem for me.
What I aim to accomplish with this web site is to display my photographs in a more expansive format with the freedom to include more photos and that my best photographs will have more of a permanent presence in my portfolio.
My site will have three main pages. It will include a portfolio page of my best photographs regardless of the time period. I will plan to have approximately 20 of my best photographs on this page. Narrowing my portfolio down to 20 photos will be quite the struggle but I will try to do it.
I plan to include a gallery page that will include the top 20 photos from each major location I have visited. This format will allow me to include more photos and will be the basis for my portfolio page.
I would like to maintain a blog with my photography thoughts. I am considering this to be part blog and part journal, in part because I’m not sure if I will be the only person to read it. Which means that some of the blog posts may consist of writing down my photography thoughts and experiences so that my future self will be able to refer back to it. But if you are reading this I hope you will find it interesting or entertaining.
A word of warning: This site will likely remain “under construction” for quite some time, so please bear with me as I develop this web site into the space for my photography that I have long envisioned. On my “to-do” list:
- Create a logo for my photography site. Everyone needs a logo, right? Not sure, but it seems like a worthy venture. So we’ll see what I come up with.
- Add photos from past trips to my gallery pages, probably 20 photos per page. I’m not sure that’s a fixed number but 20 photos seems to be the consensus among photographers on how many photos one should include in a portfolio or gallery. Mainly because people can’t pay attention past 20 photos, which might even be a stretch nowadays. I’ll see how this goes but I certainly reserve the right to include more, or fewer, depending on the quality of the photos I took. One source of delay in including photos is that some were last processed up to seven years ago and may not meet my personal standards at this point. I will probably put them in and then swap them out with a new and improved version when I get around to it.
- Pick my all time favorites to include in my portfolio. I’m not sure how long that will take but I’m sure it will be a moving target as I take and process new photos. Of course, visitors to my site can have a say in what photos you think should be included, which may become a rich source of discussion or debate. We’ll see.
- Add new entries to my blog. I hope to add a new blog post at least once a month, but that will vary depending on my motivation and other activities. I already have a long list of topics to include and I’m sure time and events will bring new topics to mind. So these topics will likely keep me busy writing for quite some time.
And that’s a wrap for my first blog post. If you’re visiting the site please sign the log and leave a comment if you wish.
